Over caffeinated
Sweden issued a recall for caffeine powder containing up to 670 mg per serving.
In Sweden’s public warning it said the dosage of the pure caffeine powder amounted to about 28 coffees in just one teaspoon.
Some products advise consumers not to exceed doses of 200 milligrams – one-sixteenth of a teaspoon.
However Sweden’s National Food Agency (NFA) said it was nearly impossible to measure out such dosages of the powder precisely with ordinary kitchen utensils – and just slight errors could prove fatal.
Last year the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) also warned against pure powdered caffeine sold in bulk bags over the internet.
“The FDA is aware of at least two deaths of young men who used these products,” it said at the time.
According to the RASFF notification the product was bound for Norway.
