BLP1™ Probiotic and Postbiotic Support for Metabolic Health

Last updated on

Support for metabolic health is a growing area for product development. Here’s why you should consider formulating weight management products with pro- and postbiotics.

There’s been a rather quiet transition occurring in the self-care health industry -- moving away from simply “getting skinnier” to getting into healthy shape. Fad diets are being replaced by adopting a dietary style that supports health and wellness. The idea of isolated or standalone measurements is swiftly being replaced by a more inclusive, holistic viewpoint to health -- and this is why metabolic health is a fertile field for product development.

Metabolic health encompasses five factors that provide consumers with a more comprehensive look at their health status.  This represents a huge market opportunity for natural products brands. The need to support metabolic health is truly great.

The gut microbiome plays a significant role in metabolic health. Some research has shown that reductions in certain bacteria species or overall reductions in microbial diversity have been associated with overweight or obesity.1

The microbiome is increasingly being researched for its potential to positively affect aspects of metabolic heatlh and overall human wellness. From production of bioactive metabolites to modulation of cell signaling pathways and many other potential functions, the microbiome is more and more the target of solutions designed to support metabolic health.2

Both probiotics and postbiotics support a healthy microbiome. ADM BPL1™ (Bifidobacterium animalis subsp. lactis CECT8145) Probiotic and BPL1™ Postbiotic are studied and have been shown to positively impact aspects of metabolic health.

BPL1™ Probiotic

BPL1™ (Bifidobacterium animalis subsp. lactis CECT8145) is ADM’s proprietary, award-winning* probiotic strain with clinically documented results. BPL1™ is a human origin strain that is patent protected and the result of more than 9 years of research and development and numerous published studies including a human clinical study.

A randomized, parallel, double-blind, placebo controlled, 12-week human clinical study involved 135 participants who consumed 1 capsule daily containing 1010 CFU of either B. animalis CECT8145 (“Ba8145”) or placebo.

Participants taking BPL1™ saw a significant reduction in body mass index after 12 weeks compared to the placebo group. Additionally, gut microbiome analyses showed an increase in Akkermansia spp. after Ba8145 treatment, particularly in the live form.3

BPL1™ probiotic is well suited for a wide range of supplement products including oil drops, capsules, sachets/sticks, and dairy products for metabolic health. It is GRAS, organic-compliant, and certified non-GMO, gluten-free, Kosher and Halal.

BPLI1™ Postbiotic

BPL1™ Postbiotic is derived from the BPL1™ probiotic strain, with an extensive research portfolio supporting its benefits. BPL1™ postbiotic is the result of more than nine years of research and development. The research has demonstrated that this unique post-biotic can support aspects of metabolic health related to body composition.

A randomized double-blind, placebo controlled clinical trial was conducted to understand BPL1™ postbiotic’s role in the support of metabolic health in women and men with waist circumferences greater than or equal to 88cm and 102cm, respectively. BPL1™ Postbiotic resulted in a significant decrease of waist circumference compared to the placebo after 12 weeks. After 12 weeks, participants in the BPL1™ Postbiotic group showed a significant reduction in abdominal visceral fat area, compared to baseline but not to placebo.3

These studies support the concept of incorporating BPL1™ probiotic and postbiotic in dietary supplements for any consumer group interested in supporting aspects of metabolic health related to body composition.

BPL1™* Postbiotic is ideal for use in a variety of food, beverage and dietary supplement formulas. It can be incorporated into conventional supplements, sports nutrition products, snacks, beverages, dairy and plant-based products both chilled and non-chilled, and more. BPL1™* Probiotic and BPL1™ Postbiotic are certified GRAS, non-GMO, gluten-free, kosher and halal. “New postbiotic technology makes its inclusion accessible to a wide variety of food and beverage applications, bringing a new level of convenience to consumers,” says Vaughn DuBow, Global Director of Marketing-Microbiome, ADM.

ADM has capabilities from sourcing and screening of novel strains to cutting-edge preclinical and clinical evaluation, scale-up and industrial manufacturing of probiotics.
