Ancient Ayurvedic botanical extract shows promise for male sexual wellness

Researchers have now documented population-level data highlighting a high prevalence of testosterone deficiency in men in the US, with testosterone levels falling across successive generations, independent of age alone.

For many American men, the shift is subtle at first. A dip in energy, less interest in intimacy, a quiet sense that something has changed. Clinicians have a name for the underlying mechanism: declining testosterone.

A 2025 analysis of National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) data covering more than 10,000 men found a testosterone deficiency prevalence of roughly 25.7% among American adult males1. Other estimates suggest for men aged 40 to 79, that figure climbs to approximately 30%.2

The conversation around male sexual health is no longer confined to the doctor’s clinic. Consumer awareness of sexual wellness has expanded significantly, and the market has responded. The global sexual health supplements sector was valued at approximately $3.8bn in 2024 and is projected to reach nearly $9.9bn by 2034, growing at a CAGR of 10.1%.3

Men represent the majority of end-users in this category, accounting for more than 55% of global market share in 2024. That dominance is driven by heightened awareness of testosterone-related issues and a growing willingness to address them proactively through natural supplements rather than waiting for clinical intervention.

Against this backdrop, ingredient developers are looking far beyond conventional formulation playbooks. One direction gaining traction among formulators is Ayurveda, specifically a class of botanical adaptogens. These plants have been used for centuries to support vitality, strength, and reproductive health in men. The challenge, historically, has been the scarcity of rigorous, placebo-controlled clinical validation to accompany that traditional use. That gap has been narrowing.

AktiveX™, developed by K. Patel Phyto Extractions – a botanical extract manufacturer with 21 years of market reputation – is a standardized extract derived from a botanical herb, classified in ancient Indian texts as a rasayana and vajikaran ingredient, used for generations in Ayurvedic practice to support male reproductive health and vitality.

The extract is classified within the Ayurvedic Shukral Dravya category, a designation historically associated with substances that promote reproductive vigor. Its patented active compounds, AktivAmides, are believed to contribute to the ingredient’s adaptogenic and androgenic properties.

Clinical validation

The extract has been evaluated in a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial involving 100 subjects over nine weeks. Participants received a daily low dose of AktiveX. This unpublished research trial measured outcomes using validated instruments standard in sexual medicine research, including the Sexual Desire Inventory (SDI), the Sexual Arousal Scale (SAS), and the Sexual Satisfaction Score (SSS), alongside laboratory measurements of serum hormone levels4.

On the hormonal front, the results were statistically significant. Free testosterone levels among male subjects taking AktiveX increased by 136% by end of treatment, compared to a 15% change in the placebo group. This finding carries clinical weight given the well-established role of free testosterone in modulating libido, energy, and physical performance in men.

The trial also measured luteinizing hormone (LH), a pituitary signaling molecule that regulates testosterone production in the testes. LH levels among male participants rose by 356% in the treatment group compared to 75% in the placebo arm, suggesting the extract may work in part by supporting the body’s own hormone-production signaling pathway4.

The functional outcomes aligned with the hormonal data. Male participants in the treatment group registered a 136% increase on the Sexual Desire Inventory, a 61% improvement on the Sexual Arousal Scale and a 54% increase in Sexual Satisfaction Score by end of treatment, compared to the placebo group. These figures point to a possible treatment effect beyond the well-documented placebo response seen in sexual wellness trials4.

For brands operating in the men’s fertility and reproductive health space, the semen vitality data may be the most compelling finding. Sperm concentration increased by 125%, sperm count per ejaculation rose 167%, and total active motile sperm – a parameter closely tied to fertility potential – improved by 355%. Equally notable was a 49% reduction in total immotile sperm, suggesting a meaningful shift in overall sperm quality and not just raw count. These findings place AktiveX in a category where clinical substantiation for natural extracts at low dosage levels remains limited.4

The scope for modern formulation

From a product development standpoint AktiveX’s profile is well suited to the demands of modern nutraceutical formulation – including chocolate, shots, stick packs and beyond. Its low effective daily serving size offers high formulation flexibility across finished dosage forms, including capsules, tablets, functional foods, and sports nutrition applications.

The AktiveX carries no synthetic additions and meets certifications including United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Organic, Halal, Kosher, and Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) standards, supporting clean-label positioning across global markets. 4

There is also a cultural dimension worth noting. American men’s relationship with sexual wellness has shifted from prescription-only territory to natural wellness support. Conversations once confined to clinicians are now part of mainstream wellness culture, visible in direct-to-consumer supplement categories, podcasts, and a broader men’s health movement that is normalizing proactive care.

Ingredients that combine clinical investigation alongside an authentic Ayurvedic heritage have a distinct story to tell in this environment. For brands building in the male sexual wellness category, the combination of low effective dosage, multiple measured outcomes, and deep traditional roots represents a formulation opportunity worth a closer look.
