Across the Asia Pacific region, consumer health priorities are evolving rapidly.
While digestive health remains an important focus area, growing concerns around metabolic dysfunction, mental wellbeing and healthy ageing populations are driving demand for functional foods, beverages and supplements.
These challenges are creating a new set of opportunities for brands and manufacturers. Increasingly, scientific research points to the gut microbiome as a key factor influencing multiple aspects of health, opening the door to more targeted and differentiated product development.

Metabolic health
Few health challenges are advancing as rapidly across Asia as metabolic dysfunction. Rising rates of obesity, insulin resistance, elevated blood glucose, hypertension, and dyslipidemia are placing pressure on healthcare systems throughout the region. In tandem, consumers are becoming more aware of the impact of metabolic health on everyday quality of life.
According to FMCG Gurus’ 2024 Metabolic Health Trend Report, consumers most commonly associate poor metabolic health with weight gain (58%), immune wellness (50%), heart disease (47%), fatigue (47%) and diabetes (46%).
These findings highlight an important market insight. Consumers do not view metabolic health purely as a weight management issue, but as a broader issue of vitality, resilience and long-term wellbeing.1 This evolving perception creates opportunities for brands to move beyond traditional weight-management propositions and develop solutions that address multiple metabolic outcomes simultaneously.
Microbiome science is emerging as a valuable tool in this regard. Certain probiotic strains have demonstrated the ability to influence metabolic markers, support glucose regulation, affect inflammatory pathways and contribute to healthier energy metabolism. However, success in this category depends heavily on strain specificity and clinical validation.

According to FMCG Gurus’ 2024 Cognitive Health APAC Regional Report, more than half of consumers prioritise solutions that support memory and sleep.2 Demand for products that enhance cognitive performance while supporting emotional wellbeing continues to expand across multiple age groups.
Consumers are also becoming more sophisticated in their understanding of mental wellness. Many individuals are seeking solutions that support resilience, mood balance and cognitive function as part of a holistic approach to health.
This growing interest is bringing greater attention to the gut-brain axis. Scientists now recognise extensive bidirectional communication between the gastrointestinal tract and the central nervous system. Microbial activity within the gut can influence neurotransmitter production, inflammatory signalling and stress responses, creating opportunities for targeted interventions that support mental wellbeing.
Consumers are increasingly seeking science-backed solutions. Data shows that 21% of APAC consumers associate probiotics with supporting mental wellbeing and mood, compared with 19.6% globally. Similarly, 19.4% of APAC consumers connect probiotics with cognitive health benefits compared to 17.6% globally.3
These figures suggest that Asian consumers may be particularly receptive to microbiome-based wellness solutions that address mental and cognitive wellbeing.

According to Global Burden of Disease 2024 data, low physical activity and low mineral bone density remain persistent, high-impact risk factors globally.5 Asia contributes to the majority of global instances linked to both these risk factors.
Similarly, FMCG Gurus’ 2025 Joint Health Survey identifies bone and joint health as one of the leading health concerns among consumers, prompting many individuals to seek foods and supplements that deliver functional benefits.6
Historically, product development in the category focused heavily on calcium and vitamin D supplementation. While these nutrients remain important, emerging evidence suggests that the microbiome may play a complementary role by supporting nutrient absorption, influencing inflammatory pathways and contributing to musculoskeletal health.
Research highlights the relationship between the gut microbiota and bone metabolism. Bone reabsorption and formation are influenced by immune pathways regulated by the gut microbiome, while age-related, low-grade, systemic inflammation has been associated with bone loss. Probiotics may therefore support bone health through immune modulation and the reduction of pro-inflammatory signals.
This broader understanding is creating opportunities for more sophisticated healthy ageing concepts that address multiple physiological pathways simultaneously.
