Experts in enzymatic hydrolysates, Spanish company Pevesa is promoting its latest nutritional ingredient, a rice-bran syrup, this week at the European nutraceutical event Vitafoods.

"Our rice-bran syrup (RBS) is a new potential nutraceutical derived from rice bran," Dr Rubio, scientific consultant for Pevesa, told NutraIngredients.com at Vitafoods this week. "RBS has the potential to lower cholesterol," he continued.

The new product, with a wide variety of applications, was borne out of a desire to provide rice bran in a liquid form, as opposed to its more common powder form. According to Pevesa, its RBS has already received considerable interest from companies involved in sports nutrition.

"The product has full nutritional, not chemical, value. We have biologically modified the rice bran to create a product with strong antioxidant properties," added Dr Rubio.

Still at an early stage, the product has only recently been developed and Dr Rubio is currently writing a paper on the RBS for future publication. "We are currently performing tests on mice in order to investigate the cholesterol-lowering abilities of the RBS," commented Dr Rubio.
