A conference organised by British research organisation Leatherhead Food International is to address the increasing concerns related to bone health and the role of the food industry in combating the growing incidence of osteoporosis.

Taking place on 29 October at the Leatherhead base in Surrey, 'A boost for bone health' will examine the latest research into bone health, current and future directions in bone health foods and associated ingredients technology. It is also to cover market trends, bone health products, formulation issues and legislation of claims and labelling.

Leatherhead noted that the World Health Organisation has defined osteoporosis as the second leading health care problem after cardiovascular disease. The lack of effective treatments for diseases such as osteoporosis places increased emphasis on preventative measures and offers considerable opportunities for the development of bone health foods.

The conference, chaired by Professor Kevin Cashman from the University College Cork, targets scientific and technical advisors, company nutritionists, food product development experts, functional foods formulators and those involved in sales and marketing and regulatory affairs.

Those attending can also sample some of the recent innovations in bone health products at a product tasting and exhibition.

The organisation is offering participants a 25 per cent discount on its report 'The Market for Bone Benefit Foods'.
