Loders Croklaan Lipid Nutrition, the Dutch supplier of lipid-based
health ingredients, has received FDA confirmation of GRAS status
for its Marinol C-38, an omega-3 fatty acid product.

Loders Croklaan Lipid Nutrition, the Dutch health ingredients company, has received confirmation from the US Food and Drug Administration of GRAS for its Marinol C-38, an omega-3 fatty acid product.

Loders Croklaan, recently sold by Unilever to Malaysia's IOI Corporation, said that its Lipid Nutrition division had provided information to the FDA, and that the agency had accepted the company's evidence that Marinol C-38 is GRAS under intended conditions of use.

Marinol C-38 can be used in wet sauce and wet soup applications, salad dressings and milk. As a major ingredient in the Marinol Powder, it also can be used in breads, biscuits, and other bakery applications where it can be dry blended with other ingredients.

"This notice is a positive step in the direction toward getting Marinol C-38 and Marinol Powder approved for their intended use in foods by the FDA," said David R. Lewis, business unit manager for Loders Croklaan Lipid Nutrition North America.

"We expect the US market to adopt these uses plus expand into many new areas such as fruit beverages, dairy drinks, margarine and dairy spreads, cereals, breads, and even ice cream," he said.

Marinol brand products contain high concentrations of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), the omega-3 fatty acids known to improve brain health and boost cardiovascular health.

The GRAS notice for Marinol C-38 is No. GRN 000105. Loders Croklaan Lipid Nutrition also supplies Clarinol CLA for weight management.
