Suspense builds for FiE awards
phytosterols are among the healthy innovations up for awards at
Food Ingredients Europe, opening in Frankfurt, Germany today. The
show is set to attract up to 12,000 food and drink industry
professionals.
More than 12 000 food and drink industry professionals are expected in Frankfurt, Germany today as the 16th edition of Food Ingredients Europe opens its doors, revealing on the first day of the show the winners of the FiE awards.
The eight nominated products come from a range of ingredient developers, including the giants such as ADM and small specialist Spain's Lipofoods. Many of the products will have implications in the health foods sector.
US agri-firm ADM has been selected for its new NutriSoy whole bean powder product, strong promotion for the product's European launch. NutriSoy is manufactured to retain the composition of the natural de-hulled whole beans, while maintaining the key components (proteins, okara, isoflavones, phytosterols, prebiotic sugars and oil) in their natural forms. The product is suitable for use in soya beverages, frozen desserts and fermented soy products, according to ADM.
Spain's Lipofoods has been nominated for Lipophytol, a formulation that significantly expands the solubility of phytosterols, the plant sterols and stanols shown to lower cholesterol when added to foods. The company says its product unlocks a whole new range of food applications for phytosterols, including bakery and pasta products, dairy products and fruit juices.
This is because the plant compounds no longer have to be administered in oil-based formulations but are incorporated into starch microparticles, broken down in the intestine and dispersed into the bile. The Lipofoods product will allow for intake of phytosterols outside of a high fat food.
Another award nominee also attempts to reduce the consumer's fat intake. Vegetable oils and fats company Aarhus is up for its Triplefill, a non-trans fatty acid filling fat for confectionery and biscuit fillings.
Other contenders include Danisco for its edible moisture barrier product, the Grindsted Barrier System, German company Degussa Food ingredients for Unipectine FZ 244, a new stabiliser concept based on pectin and Dutch group DMV International for Textrion Gel 01, its gelatine replacer for dairy products.
Karlshamns has been nominated for Akocheese, a vegetable fat blend for cheese production and the French group Limagrain Céréales Ingredients received a nomination for FCI TW 1000R product, the latest texturant in its FCI range.
The gold, silver and bronze awards, given in recognition of those companies, research institutes or universities that 'deliver both innovation and quality to the manufacture and development of food ingredients', will be presented this evening in Frankfurt. Winners will be revealed in tomorrow's news along with the latest show stories from the NutraIngredients team.
