Israeli firm Enzymotec has joined forces with the French firm Phosphotec in order to boost the presence of its phosphatidylserine (PS) products in the French market.

Under the terms of the new agreement, Phosphotec will take on the distribution of Enzymotec’s branded Sharp PS products.

“We expect that the collaboration with Phosphotech will enable us to deepen our penetration into the French market, which is one of the leading nutraceutical markets in Europe,” said Michal Haim-Bravman, Enzymotec's Europe director of sales and marketing.

The collaboration will cover Enzymotec’s phospholipids line of cognitive ingredients, under the Sharp brand, which include Sharp PS, Sharp PS Gold, and Sharp PS Silver.

PS

PS is present in all biological membranes but in animals is most concentrated in the brain.

PS is said to regulate many metabolic processes including neuronal signaling. However the body cannot synthesize it and changes in the western diet over recent years have led to a decline in dietary uptake of the nutrient.

The compund, derived from soybeans, has been shown to enhance memory and cognitive performance, and is targeted at both the elderly and young adults under stress.

Expanding reach

Phosphotec manufactures its own phospholipid ingredients, including Phosphatidylcholine grafted with DHA under the Phosphomins trade mark.

Enzymotec said the addition of PS based products to the ingredient portfolio complements the range.

“Among the PS range, PS conjugated with DHA has been developed to support better brain activities. PS-DHA has been shown to enhance concentration, memory and cognitive capacities,” it said.

“The French nutraceuticals brands have a very strong presence in other European countries and we expect that working closely with leading French companies will further expand our market share in the European market.”
