EHPM calls for MEP health claims help

The European Federation of Associations of Health Product Manufacturers (EHPM) has called on the European Commission to halt to the “piecemeal adoption” of article 13 of the EU nutrition and health claims regulation.

If this occurs, Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) may be in a better position to review the controversial four-year-old legislation, and amend it to remove what industry perceives as biases against smaller businesses, along with consumer choice.

“The batch-wise approach to the adoption of the article 13 Community list of generic health claims, distorts the competition in the market and is one of the many concerns that our industry has on the current implementation process of this Regulation,” said EHPM chairman, Peter Van Doorn.

In a recent EHPM convened meeting on the regulation, a French report was presented which demonstrated that the market for functional foods would “dry up” as a result of the regulation.

At the same meeting Brussels-based food lawyer Jean Savigny said the regulation was not being implemented with its original intent in mind.
