The quality of research backing omega-3s such as DHA and EPA has had vindicated with the fatty acids receiving more positive health claim opinions than any other nutrient in Europe’s tough new health claims regime. Only vitamins and minerals have performed anywhere near as well.

That performance is discussed by Baldur Hjaltason, chairman of leading marine-sourced omega-3 group, the Global Organization for EPA and DHA Omega-3 (GOED), and strategic business development manager at EPAX, and Adam Ismail, GOED executive director.

‘It is an affirmation that DHA and EPA are the most scientifically supported nutritional ingredients out there,” Ismail said.

Hjaltasan said that while some of the levels associated with some of the opinions were higher than GOED would have liked, it was nonetheless, “a very good start”.

They also discuss the way GOED is involved in omega-3 research in emrging areas such as mood and Alzheimer's.
