Fonterra has been given a seat on an exclusive world trade advisory group which, the co-operative says, will allow it to aid the “smooth the flow” of New Zealand imports and exports.

The diary giant is the first New Zealand firm to join the World Customs Organisation’s Private Sector Consultative Group (PSCG).

The group provides trade-related advice to intergovernmental body The World Customs Organisation (WCO) which develops global customs standards and procedures relating to trade facilitation and supply chain security.

Fonterra group customs manager, Robb Stevens said the invitation recognised the cooperative’s global presence as a manufacturer and international seller as well as its experience with Customs authorities in various markets.

Stevens will represent Fonterra at the 19th meeting of the PSCG on June 20-22, 2011 in Brussels, Belgium.

Made up by 30 companies and associations, PSCG membership is by invitation only and includes major global companies such as General Motors, IBM, FedEx and the World Shipping Council.
