Three of the best-known brand names in nutraceuticals – Clarinol, PinnoThin and Marinol – have been snapped up by Illinois-based Stepan Company from Lipid Nutrition for an undisclosed sum.

The brands will be integrated into Stepan's Food and Health Specialties business, which will be renamed Stepan Lipid Nutrition, said the firm.

“Our acquired products combined with our Neobee Medium Chain Triglycerides provide us with a unique patented portfolio of nutritional oils with a greater offering to our customers in the food, supplement, nutrition and pharmaceutical industries worldwide.”

Clarinol conjugated linoleic acid is claimed to help reduce body fat and increase lean muscle mass, while PinnoThin – made from Korean pine nuts - is an appetite suppressant. Marinol fish-oil concentrates are formulated to be rich in the long chain omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA.

Stepan - which is a leading producer of surfactants, but also supplies flavors, emulsifiers and solubilizers - was not available for comment as this article went to press.
