A unique focus on pulling together information on the complex issues of chronic conditions and ageing will help to provide Nestlé with a better idea of the ‘big picture’ behind how nutrition and health interact, says the head of the new unit.

Speaking with NutraIngredients after its official inauguration last week, Ed Baetge, Director of the Nestlé Institute of Health Sciences said the institute will provide a scientific rationale for Nestlé to move towards medical nutrition products that target the prevention of chronic conditions of ageing, and may lead to insights into personalised nutrition.

“The foundation of our institute is really the systems biology approach to putting all of that data together and building models that will start give us greater insight into what’s going on,” said Baetge.

“It’s very complex because each of us are unique individuals and we respond slightly differently, we have slightly different gene expression profiles.”

The research director explained that the centre will work to build models that try to are able to reduce vast array of –omics data down to a picture “that can tell you something about what the phenotype of a person is that might respond one way or another way.”

“We are initially going to try to bring this into groups of people that are related in some way, rather than an individual. But that’s where it’s going,” he confirmed.
