A drinkable probiotic shot will be launched at CPhI 2013 in a mini bottle using Drycap technology, which lets probiotics live in a dry environment.

The BB-12 + fiber shot, by Chr. Hansen, which produces natural ingredients for the food and beverage industry, will initially be available in Italy, where half of probiotic units sold come in a liquid format, before expanding globally in 2014.

Lasse Nagell, sales and marketing VP, health and nutrition, Chr. Hansen, said the firm had overcome issues of stability through the alu-blister packaging technology, which is integrated into the mini-bottle cap.

The 10ml shots will combine probiotic strain BB-12 (Bifidobacterium) and fiber in the form of fructo-oligosaccharides (FOS) and has a 24 month shelf life.

Debut launch

“Instead of taking a pill or a capsule, a small liquid shot is easier to administer. We know, using Italy as a reference this is a very popular form of dosage for children,” said Nagell.

For its debut launch at CPhI 2013 pharmaceutical event from October 22-24, in Frankfurt, the probiotic will be available in lemon flavour only, but Nagell said its manufacturing partner Biofarma can create more.

“We are really looking forward to showcasing this healthy, lemon-flavoured shot that combines two ingredients which both have a long history of use, high consumer awareness and acceptance,” said Nagell.

Chr. Hansen previously made liquid probiotics in an oil drop form but this was mainly targeted at infants and young children.

The European Food Safety Authority’s rulings on probiotic health claims have been the source of some contention in recent years, prompting the regulation authority to issue guidance to companies who want to submit a probiotic health claim application.
