Fish, krill win sustainability seal
An Israeli krill oil supplier and a Norwegian fish oil supplier have both had aspects of their omega-3 supply chain verified by fisheries sustainability NGO, Friend of the Sea (FOS).

FOS verified krill supplier Enzymotech’s Antarctic supply chain as sustainable according to FOS criteria meaning it can now bear the FOS marque in its marketing.

"As a company that is entirely committed to its products quality, the FOS certificate for our krill oil products means a great deal to us,” said Enzymotech CEO, Dr Ariel Katz, in a statement of its K-Real offering.

“This is yet another milestone in the numerous efforts that Enzymotec takes to ensure sustainability throughout our entire line of products, from ingredients that are designed for the infant formula market to the range of omega-3 based ingredients intended for the dietary supplements market…”

Pacific anchovy fishery

FMC-owned EPAX had its 5-year-old FOS approval for its south east Pacific Ocean anchovy fishery renewed via a fresh audit. It was the first omega-3 supplier to win the approval.

“The Friend of the Sea certification is very important to us because it acknowledges our commitment to sustainable fishing practices and our sense of responsibility concerning natural resources,” said Thomas Gulbrandsen, Sales Director of Epax.

Paolo Bray, FOS director, added: “This certification confirms FOS eco label presence in the omega-3 market and its acceptance as standard of sustainability for the Omega-3 industry.”

Criteria

FOS fishery stewardship criteria includes:

  • Stock is not overfished
  • Fishery meets management measures
  • No endangered species by-catch
  • No adverse impact on ecosystem or seabed
  • Social accountability
  • Gradual reduction of carbon footprint

Other to have won FOS support include krill players Rimfrost in Norway and Neptune Technologies and Bioressources in Canada.
