Japan has always led the world in functional food experimentation even if the results of most of that have remained within the confines of the 127.3m-strong nation with the world's oldest average lifespan - 84.6 years.

FoodNavigator-Asia and NutraIngredients spent three days at Health Ingredients-Japan in Tokyo and found an industry encouraged by government provocation to push beyond Japan - whose population is falling - whilst simultaneously playing a bigger role in keeping its ageing population healthy, thus reducing the burden on an increasingly overburdened medical system.

Editors Richard Whitehead and Shane Starling share insights on the event, the market, game-changing health claim laws and a booming placenta market to battle ageing.
