Archer Daniels Midland Company, or ADM, launched a new powder format for its Onavita DHA algal oil.

The powder is part of ADM’s expanding portfolio in the health and wellness ingredient space, which now includes probiotics, vitamins, botanical extracts, and other nutritional oils.

It is an expansion of ADM’s omega-3 line, which currently consist of ALA flaxseed oil and DHA algal oil.

Competing with an ever-growing list of competitors in the algal DHA space, business manager of ADM’s nutritional oils unit Jen Hogan told us that the addition allows manufacturers “to get all their needs from a single supplier.”

“With this addition, developers can now capitalize on the health benefits of omega-3’s in a variety of applications, and leverage ADM’s extensive portfolio of ingredient and solution capabilities…from gluten-free and vegan, to allergen-free labeling options for food, beverage and supplements,” she added.

The powder is positioned for use in a wide variety of dietary supplements and fortified food products, such as nutritional bars and powdered beverages. It also gives manufacturers the chance to formulate vegan and allergen-free products.

“Today’s health-conscious consumer is driving demand for functional products that support their personal health and wellness goals,” Hogan added.

“That’s why we’re excited to expand our product line of high-quality, sustainably sourced omega-3 ingredients to include yet another option for product developers who are seeking ingredients that help support cognitive, heart and eye health,”

ADM’s foray into omega-3s started in 2014 with an ingredient produced via an algae fermentation process. At the time, the company focused on the animal feed sector.
