A project that used gene technology to create canola oil that yields quantities of long-chain omega-3 previously only available in fish will be showcased at the first NutraIngredients Omega-3 Summit in Singapore.

The event, which takes place from February 20-22, will hear from Dr Surinder Singh, Chief Research Scientist and Group Leader, Plant Oil Engineering, at CSIRO Agriculture & Food in Australia.

He said: “Consumer demand for long chain omega-3 oils is growing faster than can be sustainably supplied from wild fish stocks. The race is on to find potential new sources, and the creation of land based plants that can yield omega-3 in the necessary quantities has been a long standing goal of bio-engineers.  CSIRO’s Plant Oil Engineering Team and their commercial partner, Nuseed have finally achieved it. It’s good news for worldwide fish stocks, and for human nutrition.”

CSIRO’s canola oil has already achieved regulatory approval in Australia and USA and is now undergoing regulatory assessment in Canada.

Dr Singh’s presentation will discuss:

• Overcoming the challenge – how metabolic engineering and gene cloning have created a commercially viable plant based source of omega-3

• Maximising market opportunity – how canola can improve human nutrition, reduce pressure on fisheries and create a high value grain crop

• Creating designer oils – the scientific advances made in plant oil synthesis that unlock potential for other functionally improved plant oils

He will be joined at the event a stellar line-up of industry experts, including:

Dr Yutaka Matsuoka, Division Chief of Health Care Research at the National Cancer Center Japan.

Peter Barraket, MD of Designs for Health Australia

Ellen Schutt, Executive Director, GOED.

Dr Surinder Singh, Group Leader: Plant Oil Engineering, CSIRO Agriculture & Food.

Ron Park, Managing Director of Koure.

Dr Mary Chong Foong Fong, Principal Investigator at the Singapore Institute for Clinical Sciences (SICS) and A*STAR.

Gerard Bannenberg, Director of Compliance and Healthcare Outreach, GOED,

The event, held in association with industry trade body GOED, will take place at Singapore’s Hilton hotel, on Orchard Road, In addition to two days of lively debate, discussion and presentations, there will also be extensive networking opportunities and social events.

GOED Executive Director Ellen Schutt said: “GOED is excited to partner with NutraIngredients on the upcoming Omega-3 Summit. South East Asia is a growing market for omega-3s and we’re looking forward to being part of the first summit of its kind taking place in the region.”
