ADM Protexin, the healthcare manufacturer, is aiming to provide a natural way to fight headaches with a new Bio-Kult capsule containing 14 strains of probiotic bacteria, plus magnesium and vitamin B6.

Bio-Kult Migréa is claimed to be the first scientifically developed, advanced multi-action formulation to target both the digestive tract and the head.

Backed by a new published clinical trial, this addition to the Bio-Kult range aims to help with the common, disabling, recurrent, neurovascular head discomfort which affects 1 in 7 people globally (Steiner et al, Migraine: the seventh disabler. 2013).

The gut-brain axis

Previous evidence has demonstrated that gut bacteria play a key role in the gut-brain axis and disturbances or imbalances of the delicate gut flora may be associated with neurological discomfort.

Hannah Braye, senior technical advisor for ADM Protexin told NutraIngredients: "The association between neurovascular and gastro intestinal issues could be linked to increased intestinal permeability, which allows leakage of undigested food particles and endotoxins into the bloodstream, triggering inflammation and possible attacks.

"Beneficial strains of gut bacteria play a crucial role in supporting the health of the gut lining, maintaining and improving gut barrier function, thereby modulating immune responses and reducing inflammation, which research suggests may be of benefit."

Magnesium and Vitamin B6

ADM Protexin says vitamin B₆ has been added to the capsules because it has been found to contribute to the normal functioning of the immune system, regulation of hormonal activity and protection against inflammation.

Braye added: "Three times more women than men experience head discomfort, often linked to their cycle, indicating that fluctuating ovarian hormones may play a role.

"Studies suggest reducing homocysteine through supplementation with nutrients such as vitamin B6 may be beneficial for reducing attacks. Stress is one of the most commonly reported triggers for head discomfort."

The firm argues that the addition of magnesium should help reduce stress, which is also commonly associated with migraines.

"Increasing magnesium levels is thought to help support the nervous system to resist stress and magnesium citrate has shown particular promise in studies for helping to prevent head pain attacks,” adds Braye.

Bio-Kult

The Bio-Kult probiotics range also includes: Bio-Kult Original, containing just 14 strains of live bacteria, to target general everyday digestive systems; Bio-Kult Infantis for babies, toddlers and young children, containing a unique seven strain probiotic mix along with Vitamin D and Omega; Bio-Kult Candéa for women, containing seven strains of probiotics and garlic and grapefruit extract targeting intimate flora; and Bio-Kult Pro-Cyan also for women, containing two specifically selected probiotic strains with Vitamin A and Cranberry, targeting the urinary tract.

ADM Protexin

US-based Archer Daniels Midland (ADM) announced its acquisition of UK-based Probiotics International Limited - known under its umbrella brand Protexin - in June last year.

The £185 million (€206m) deal, was part of a series of investments as ADM continues to expand its portfolio of health and wellness offerings in both human and animal nutrition.
