Morinaga Milk Industry Co., Ltd. has announced its subsidiary Milei GmbH, which, according to 2019 data from Absolute Reports has the largest share of the global market in terms of production volume of the functional ingredient lactoferrin, will more than double its production capacity by 2021.

Morinaga Milk Group said as demand for lactoferrin has grown, it considers it an important functional ingredient to support people’s health and nutrition worldwide. The company has been conducting research and seeking commercial applications on lactoferrin for more than six decades.

Morinaga is aiming to increase the sales of its own lactoferrin-related products by expanding production capacity at Milei to approximately 170 tons, more than double the amount in 2019.

Milei, based in Leutkirch, Germany, produces lactoferrin, whey protein concentrate, lactose and other dairy ingredients mainly for Europe and Asia.

The company said the investment of €15m ($17.6m) for the expansion will not affect financial results for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2021.
