Sixth time still not a charm: FDA again rejects NDIN for kratom

The unsuccessful NDI notification, submitted by American Botanicals Corporation (NDIN #1220), marks the sixth time an NDIN has been filed with the agency for kratom. All have been unsuccessful*. The main benefits cited by users include managing chronic pain and helping with opioid addiction, and researchers from Johns Hopkins University have called on the FDA to regulate kratom, and for rigorous clinical research to explore the potential therapeutic benefits. “On its face, it is not a legal dietary ingredient” Despite its potential efficacy, some stakeholders are not convinced that kratom is a dietary ingredient. Speaking with NutraIngredients-USA towards the end of 2021, Steve Mister, President and CEO of the Council for Responsible Nutrition (CRN), told us that his organization recommends that member companies to not sell products containing kratom. “The regulations are pretty clear in the US,” he said. “It has not been the subject of a successful New Dietary Ingredient Notification (NDIN), nor has a serious NDIN been filed.
