“If ashwagandha is the King of Ayurveda, then shatavari is the Queen,” Eric Anderson, managing director of NXT USA, told NutraIngredients about the company’s new Xeya-branded ingredient to support women’s hormonal health.

The company officially launched Xeya on the eve of Expo West 2025 in Anaheim. It sees the ingredient as offering a “natural, effective and safe solution for women at every stage of life.” Xeya is standardized to 15% shatavarins to promote hormonal balance, support menstrual health, ease symptoms of PCOS and alleviate the challenges of perimenopause and menopause, according to NXT-USA.

“We are committed to offering a targeted women’s supplement that is not only rooted in centuries of traditional wisdom but also backed by clinical research,” Anderson said.

The ingredient is supported by two clinical trials at a dose of 100 mg per day, said the company, which reportedly showed general benefits for women’s health. The studies are not yet published.

“For too long, women’s health has been underserved and overlooked in scientific research,” Anderson said. “Xeya, designed for health-conscious women aged 18 to 75+, helps fill this gap by supporting hormonal fluctuations across life’s key transitions—from menstrual health to perimenopause and beyond.

“In today’s fast-paced world, women face unique physiological demands, and shatavari’s adaptogenic properties can offer critical support for stress management, cognition and overall well-being.”

Ayurvedic traditional use

Shatavari (Asparagus racemosus) is reported to contain phytoestrogens, compounds known for their weak estrogen-like effects. Previous studies have found that shatavarins, key phyto-actives in shatavari, may interact with estrogen receptors.

According to a 2024 paper in Bioinformation, “Shatavari is an important Ayurvedic herb that has several bioactive phytoconstituents such as various shatavarins which have high molecular weights and large structures.

“The effects of shatavari are well-known in improving female health conditions. Shatavari is known to manage and improve female reproductive health, managing symptoms of menopause, antioxidant effect, anti-anxiety effect, helps in proper lactation and other female health-related aspects,” wrote scientists from Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University-Hyderabad in India.

The Indian herb may also improve muscle function in older women. A study, published in Frontiers in Nutrition earlier this year, indicated that eight weeks of supplementation combined with resistance training increased training load and maximum weight lifted.

“These novel observations strongly support the notion that shatavari supplementation promotes neuromuscular fatigue resistance,” wrote researchers from Manchester Metropolitan University, the University of Birmingham and the University of Exeter in the UK.

Furthermore, a 2020 paper in Biogerontology suggested that shatavarins may also exert a longevity effect, for C. elegans worms at least.
