Introduced at VitaFoods 2025, Tulsinity Bio is derived from the leaves of the Krishna variety of holy basil, an adaptogen traditionally used for adjusting to stress.
According to the company, the ingredient targets the skin–brain axis by modulating both psychological stress and its visible effects on the skin.
“Tulsinity Bio acts through complementary mechanisms that target the biological impacts of psychological stress on the skin,” Sebastien Le Quere, nutraceutical development and marketing manager at Laboratoires Expanscience, told NutraIngredients.
“It helps regulate cortisol levels, both locally and systemically, and contributes to the reduction of oxidative stress and inflammation—key factors in stress-related skin aging. These combined effects contribute to the dual action of Tulsinity Bio on emotional well-being and skin health.”
Scientific backing
Before the launch, Laboratoires Expanscience conducted two studies to assess the ingredient’s efficacy. The first in vitro study performed on stressed skin cell models showed that the holy basil leaf extract can preserve the integrity of the skin barrier, while maintaining skin hydration and elasticity.
“Tulsinity Bio reduced cortisol production, protein oxidation and pro-inflammatory cytokines in stressed keratinocytes,” Le Quere explained. “It also protects structural skin components by preserving collagen and elastin fibers, as well as hyaluronic acid levels.”
The second pilot study was an eight-week randomized controlled trial that assessed the effect of 250 mg/day of Tulsinity Bio in stressed adults with sensitive skin.
“The results included a reduction in perceived stress and salivary cortisol, improved skin elasticity, reduced skin sensitivity and a boost in appearance-related self-esteem,” Le Quere said.
This dual action across skin and mind suggests the ingredient acts through multiple synergistic pathways. These pathways include cortisol modulation, preservation of skin structure and protection from oxidative stress and inflammation.
Sustainability and social responsibility
Tulsinity Bio is suited to a wide variety of delivery formats, including capsules and tablets, gummies and stick packs or sachets for beverage applications.
The ingredient also aligns with Laboratoires Expanscience’s commitment to delivering effective active ingredients while protecting the planet. The holy basil is cultivated using regenerative farming practices and is Regenerative Organic Certified (ROC) and Fair for Life (FFL) certified.
“These certifications are not just labels—they represent a holistic approach to ingredient development that benefits the planet, the farmers and the end consumer,” Le Quere said.
“With Tulsinity Bio, our goal was not only to support emotional well-being and skin health, but also to create a positive impact from seed to skin—delivering a powerful, purpose-driven nutraceutical active for the beauty and wellness industries.”
