The global prebiotic market, valued in the billions, is projected to grow at a strong compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 8.15% through 2026, according to Mordor Intelligence. Europe currently leads as the largest market, while North America and Asia are experiencing notable growth.
Industry and academia are aligned on the definition following the formal adoption of ISAPP’s 2017 definition by the International Probiotics Association (IPA).
ISAPP’s 2017 expert consensus document in Nature Reviews Gastroenterology & Hepatology defined a prebiotic as: “A substrate that is selectively utilized by host microorganisms conferring a health benefit.”
The list of prebiotics has expanded over the years, and now includes inulin, FOS, GOS, XOS, resistant starch, polyphenols and more. Innovation is creating opportunities to promote the growth of a diverse range of microorganisms, not just Bifidobacteria. Moreover, advances in personalized nutrition and metabolomics are boosting efficacy and deepening our understanding of responders versus non-responders and how these ingredients can correct compositional imbalances to promote health and wellness.
The upcoming Prebiotics: Current landscape and future directions webinar will bring together Koen Venema, PhD, from Wageningen Food & Biobased Research (Wageningen University) and Caitlin Hall, PhD, from myota, for a 45-minute exploration of the science, regulatory landscape, formulation and commercial opportunities for prebiotics.
This FREE webinar (registration required) will take place on Dec. 9, 2025 at 12 p.m. EST, 6 p.m. GMT, and will be moderated by Stephen Daniells, PhD, editor-in-chief of NutraIngredients.
