The deal, announced on Dec. 11 follows Carbyne’s 2024 acquisition of Biomapas, a pan-European pharma services provider, and recent partnerships with agri-biotech company Elicit Plant and biological supplier Chemia S.P.A.
This recent acquisition therefore aligns with Carbyne’s focus on building and investing in growing European businesses with strong market positions and a commitment to innovation.
“SuanNutra is an impressive nutraceutical ingredients platform with meaningful opportunities ahead—whether through securing dedicated supply chains, broadening its portfolio of clinically validated ingredients or deepening its relevance among an already diverse customer base,” said Dr. Markus Petersen, managing partner at Carbyne.
“We have great confidence in the management team and look forward to building the next chapter together.”
Why is SuanFarma selling SuanNutra?
SuanNutra is the nutraceutical ingredients business of SuanFarma, a portfolio company of Archimed, which acquired SuanFarma in 2021.
Initially, the group set out to expand its nutraceutical portfolio, acquiring botanical R&D specialist Monteloeder in 2022. However, SuanFarma has recently begun to strengthen its position in the active pharmaceutical ingredients market and is now selling SuanNutra to pursue this new strategic focus.
SuanNutra operates globally through Monteloeder, Gonmisol and SuanNutra USA, serving around 1,500 customers across 50 countries. While Monteloader primarily provides branded ingredients and botanical extracts, Gonmisol and SuanNutra USA focus on functional ingredients.
SuanNutra’s Monteloeder supplies a number of branded ingredients included Metabolaid, a lemon verbena and hibiscus blend for weight management, RelaxPLX for sleep and mental clarity, and MindRevive for cognitive performance.
Its U.S. arm, SuanNutra USA, reports its top-selling ingredients to be berberine, menaquinone-4 and alpha lipoic acid.
Under Carbyne’s ownership, SuanNutra intends to build on its existing foundations in the U.S., develop its Gonmisol brand and prioritize continued investment in its globally recognized Monteloeder branded ingredients.
A growing company
Following the implementation of strategic initiatives led by CEO Anthony Weston, SuanNutra has seen 10 consecutive quarters of revenue and gross profit growth.
With this in mind, Carbyne identified clear potential to build on SuanNutra’s leading position in the industry, providing the company with solid foundations for continued expansion.
“SuanNutra is the company it is today because of the commitment, expertise and character of the people who have shaped it,” said Anthony Weston, CEO of SuanNutra.
“Across the organization, colleagues have worked with dedication to strengthen our capabilities, refine our portfolio and build a culture that is both disciplined and ambitious. Their contribution has been central to the progress we have made and to the reputation SuanNutra now enjoys in our industry.”
Weston said the acquisition represents a period of great opportunity for the company as it looks to expand and grow.
“As we look ahead, we are genuinely excited to be partnering with Carbyne,” he said. “Their sector understanding, long-term approach and alignment with our values make them an excellent partner for the next phase of our journey. Together, we will continue to build on the strong foundations already in place, broaden our reach and develop the opportunities that lie ahead for our people, our customers and our partners.”
