Global life science company Bioiberica and dairy producer Lactalis Spain have developed the first milk drink enriched with native type II collagen in Spain.

Available in supermarkets and specialist stores throughout the country, the Puleva Vita Calcio Colágeno drink contains Bioiberica’s Collavant n2, a product the company has scientifically validated for joint health.

“The launch of Puleva Vita Calcio Colágeno is both a success story in itself, and a positive sign for future innovations,” said Antonio Vendrell, marketing director at Bioiberica.

“Its development demonstrates the successful application of Collavant n2 in a mainstream consumer beverage, highlighting our capacity to infuse our high-quality bioactive ingredients across diverse consumer segments. The release also reinforces our position in the functional food space, which we are dedicated to strengthening through continuous innovation and strategic partnerships”.

Collagen has evolved from a niche supplement to a mainstream ingredient across functional foods, beverages, nutricosmetics and biomedical uses. As consumers seek clean-label, high-protein products, collagen has been incorporated into bars, snacks, gummies and other everyday consumable formats.

According to IMARC Group’s market analysis, the global collagen ingredients market is expected to grow from about US$10.6 billion in 2024 to US$17.7 billion by 2033 at a 5.56% CAGR.

Lactalis noted that collagen consumption in Spain has grown significantly, with more than 500 new collagen products launched between 2022 and 2024.

The three main types of commercially available collagen ingredients are collagen peptides (hydrolyzed), native (undenatured) type II collagen and gelatin.

Native type II collagen has been studied for its specific benefits for joint health, owing to its structure and mechanism of action. Bioiberica’s Collavant n2 ingredient is an undenatured type II collagen derived from chicken sternum.

The company recently presented evidence that Collavant n2 can support joint health in healthy individuals and has previously conducted research in active individuals, finding that the product may support faster recovery.

Its latest research suggested that participants with activity-related joint discomfort who consumed a low daily dose of 40 mg Collavant n2 for six months reduced markers of cartilage breakdown by 18.3% compared to a 20.6% increase in the placebo group.

Bioiberica noted that including the ingredient in the Puleva Vita Calcio Colágeno adds a seal of safety and quality to the drink through its self-affirmed Generally Recognized As Safe (GRAS) status.

“Puleva Vita Calcio is already the leading brand in the calcium-enriched dairy drink category, and now this new formulation offers an innovative, practical and natural solution to the growing demand for collagen in Spain,” commented Cristina Torres Antelo, brand manager at Lactalis Puleva.
