Marshall’s husband, an entrepreneur in vehicle fabrication, said he wanted to make his way to the ‘land of opportunity,’ so the couple started making plans to move out of the country.
“So I started looking at Fonterra to see what was out there and managed to find a slightly left field secondment within Fonterra and got us to Missouri at the starting point, which was actually a really nice transition,” Marshall said.
Eventually she took on a different role that brought her to Chicago. It is not quite the sheep and cow farm she grew up on, but Marshall said she enjoys growing vegetables during the warmer months.
“I’ve been really blessed with the opportunity to try a lot of new roles in a really safe way,” she said. “I remember my transition from my first technical role in the U.S. into a marketing role, and the president of the office coming past my desk and just saying, ‘don’t worry about this. Take the opportunity and if it doesn’t work out, we’ll find you something else.’”
Marshall said those words made her feel safe and able to experiment with a variety of roles. Throughout her journey at Fonterra, the flexibility has allowed her to acquire new skills along the way, which she said has added value to the work she brings to the company as well as customers she works with.
She expressed deep passion for the nutrition industry and the people within it, describing herself as a connector who thrives at trade shows by bouncing ideas with colleagues. Looking ahead, Marshall said she envisions her future in health and wellness roles that keep her customer-facing, where she can leverage her diverse skill set and continue fostering her active lifestyle.
