Belgian ingredient supplier Botalys and U.S. microbiome product developer Biohm Technologies have teamed up to create a red ginseng-postbiotic product concept for post-workout muscle recovery as a dual mechanism recovery solution.

The paired ingredients present a synergistic and comprehensive recovery solution for the active nutrition market, targeting different biological pathways to provide broader recovery coverage across both immune signaling and muscle metabolism.

While Botalys’ red ginseng supports muscle and systemic recovery through pathways linked to mitochondrial energy and cellular resistance, Biohm’s postbiotic acts upstream via the gut-immune axis to support balanced inflammatory signalling.

The proprietary red ginseng is standardized to over 12% total ginsenosides, including over 10% rare ginsenosides (Rg3, Rg5, Rk1). Biohm’s Phorum product is a three-strain heat-treated bacterial and fungal probiotic combination of Lactobacillus acidophilus 16axg, Lacticaseibacillus rhamnosus 18fx, and Saccharomyces boulardii.

Rather than targeting just one biological lever, the dual mechanism sets out to address an unmet need, as intense exercise triggers not only muscle soreness but also transient immune stress, inflammatory signaling and oxidative load.

Kristin Wilhoyte, vice president of marketing at Biohm, told NutraIngredients that addressing these recovery factors is not just of importance to athletes but also to any individuals of all ages who want to remain active in daily life.

The companies position the product for portfolios targeting consumers who train regularly, stay active and value recovery as part of a sustainable, long-term health routine. As such, it is designed to be integrated active lifestyle supplements, daily recovery and resilience formulas, functional beverages and wellness shots, and powders, capsules and stick packs.

Botalys and Biohm will supply their ingredients independently through their existing commercial channels, Wilhoyte noted.

“This gives brands flexibility in formulation design, dosage and positioning, rather than locking them into a fixed premix,” she said. “The ingredients are commercially available in the US, with broader international availability subject to local regulatory requirements.”

This is latest in a series of partnerships for both companies.

Last year, Botalys partnered with Haleon to deliver a new high-purity, sustainable botanical ingredient, as well as with Brightseed to use AI to measure and optimize the bioactive expression of the company’s plant supply.

Biohm partnered with ADM to launch a microbiome formulation specifically formulated for women between the ages of 45 and 65 and previously partnered with Life Extension to create a line of microbiome products.

When asked about the future of the partnership between Biohm and Botalys, Wilhoyte clarified that the deal is “not a formal strategic partnership, in a traditional sense.” Instead, she explained that it is a deliberate formulation concept to bring together two complementary ingredients.

“We see strong potential for brands to build on this multi-system recovery approach,” she said.
