Probiota Americas, hosted by NutraIngredients in association with the International Probiotics Association, will take place at the Westin Bayshore, Vancouver from June 8 to 10. The three-day conference will feature world-leading experts presenting the latest scientific, technical, regulatory, business and market insights.
AM: Healthspan and phages
Day 2 kicks off early with longevity and healthspan and how the microbiome is increasingly implicated as a central player in aging, particularly when we look at its impacts on immunosenescence and cognition. Opening the session, Dr. Ohad Manor, vice president of computational precision health at Thorne, will explore the emerging microbiome research in the context of aging and highlight the potential for AI-driven personalization. Shinto Kurosaki, research associate at Morinaga Milk Industry, will then explore the role of biotics for brain health and emotional well-being across life stages.
To close out the session, Dr. Manor will join Rahul Sachdeva, global category lead for healthy longevity at Novonesis, and Dr. Gregory Leyer, scientific advisor at Synbiotic Health, for a panel discussion.
The second session of the morning will dive into the exciting world of phages and the virome, and will open with a wide-ranging presentation by Dr. Ann Gregory from the University of Calgary on the viral biogeography across the human body. John Beckley from North Caroline State University will then provide an overview of the current state of CRISPR-engineered phages for in situ microbiome editing.
Scientific Frontiers and Fermentation in Action
After the networking break, we’ll hear from this year’s winners of our Scientific Frontiers initiative. The winner of the industry category is Dr. Trevor Kirby, principal research scientist, AG1, who will give a presentation titled “A preliminary exploration of alternative methods for probiotic enumeration”. The winner of our student competition is Rachel Asbury, a PhD student at the University of Toronto, who will present “High-throughput culturomics reveals prebiotic selectivity within the gut microbiota”.
Taking us through to lunch, Chef Connor Flynn (also known as The Preserving Chef) will deliver a presentation on vegetable fermentation for our changing world and then lead an interactive demonstration on real-time, vacuum-sealed vegetable fermentation.
PM: Weight management and prebiotics
The roundtable lunch discussions will be followed by the weight management session, featuring Dr. Anneleen Segers, head of lab and medical affairs manager for The Akkermansia Company (Danone), Dr. Peng Guo, chief technology officer at BioGrowing, and Mark Walin, senior vice president of business development and marketing at Bio-Cat Enzymes & Microbials. These speakers will explore the potential of specific probiotic and postbiotic strains to support weight management and rethink the GLP-1 market
Next up, we will put prebiotics in the spotlight with presentations by Dr. Doug Bolster, vice president of scientific and medical affairs for pioneering prebiotic soda brand OLIPOP, Dr. Bradley Saville from the University of Toronto and Michael Steller, unit head at Health Canada.
Closing out day 2 will be Dr. Marcel van de Wouw, program director, microbiome for The Weston Family Foundation, who will issue a call to action on bridging the translational divide and explore the strategic role of philanthropy in accelerating academic microbiome science towards real-world solutions.
Probiota Americas
Key sessions on Day 1 and 3 include the state of the market, the regulatory landscape, the microbiome and microbiome modulators for mitigation of environmental toxins, Probiota Pioneers, companion animals, women’s health, innovation in action, and our closing Future Focus panel.
