Virun was founded by Philip Bromley and Nick Huang in 2003. The company started life in the pharmaceutical delivery systems space, and the name is combination of “virus” and “immune”. In nutraceuticals, food and beverage, the company is best known for its advanced nutrient delivery technologies including emulsion and liposomal delivery platforms for ingredients such as Omega-3, astaxanthin, CoQ10 and PQQ.
Virun has built a portfolio of more than 100 patents approved, and boasts development and manufacturing sites in Los Angeles, U.S. and County Kildare, Ireland.
“Virun has built an exceptional technology platform and is one of the true leaders within liposomal and advanced liquid delivery systems,” said Christian Merup, CEO of Wellma. “They are already supporting many winning fast-growing brands, and we have strong belief in their technology and team going forward.
“With this partnership, Wellma establishes a leading position in one of the fastest-growing categories in our industry, and we are proud to welcome the Virun team to the Wellma family. The team behind Virun has together built a culture of innovation, creativity and entrepreneurship that resonates perfectly with us, and we are excited for the future together.”
Wellma is a fast-growing global leader in development and co-manufacturing of nutraceuticals. Virun is the thirteenth company acquired by Wellma and the first in the U.S., Bromley told NutraIngredients.
In 2025 alone, Wellma announced five acquisitions, including Fipros A/S, a Danish CDMO specializing in gels and powders, The Bar Factory, a Dutch CDMO specializing in functional protein and energy bars, PlantaCorp, a German CDMO specializing in liposomal technology for liquid formulations, NutraResearch, a Spanish CDMO dedicated to liquid and solid nutraceutical forms, Nutrifundiet, a Spanish gummy specialist.
Headquartered in Stockholm, Wellma serves over 50 markets globally.
“What attracted me to Wellma was the opportunity to continue driving Virun with the same entrepreneurial spirit that has defined us for more than two decades, while gaining access to a broader team with deep industry expertise and growth opportunities on both sides of the Atlantic,” said Philip Bromley, founder and CEO of Virun.
“Together with Wellma, we can better support our customers as they expand into Europe, while also helping Wellma’s partners strengthen their presence in the US market. It is a partnership built on shared values and a long-term growth mindset. I have never seen anything like the Wellma model, and it attracted us a lot”
