As seen by NutraIngredients, the notice dated July 24, 2026, was directed at the product Decode Age NMN, which is said to contain the “unapproved ingredient Nicotinamide mononucleotide (NMN)” and is sold through e-commerce platforms such as Amazon India and 1mg.
The FSSAI’s notice against Decode Age NMN was also copied to e-commerce platforms, which were told to de-list the product. Failure to do so may result in penalties stated in the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2026.
NMN supplements can be widely found on India’s e-commerce platforms. On Amazon India, nearly 120 results could be found when searching for the term “NMN supplement”. Another e-commerce platform, Flipkart, yielded 55 results for the term “NMN”.
Need to go through non-specified food approvals
However, NMN is not yet approved for use as an ingredient in food supplements in India, Rahull Batra, a food consultant for health supplements and nutraceuticals at Regulatory Nation (RRN Solutions LLP), told NutraIngredients.
This is because NMN is not listed as an ingredient permitted for use in supplements under “Food Safety and Standards (Health Supplements, Nutraceuticals, Food for Special Dietary Use, Food for Special Medical Purpose, Functional Food, and Novel Food) Regulations, 2016.”
As such, companies wishing to formulate products using NMN will need to seek approval from the FSSAI by applying their NMN ingredient or NMN-containing products via the non-specified food and food ingredients route.
“If companies want to launch any ingredient or any product using an ingredient which is as of now not listed in the Indian regulations, but has global acceptance or is globally approved, they can apply for a product approval under the non-specified food and food ingredient framework,” Rahull said. “And this is the case for NMN, since it is not yet listed in the FSSAI regulations.”
However, no NMN ingredient or product has been approved by the regulator yet, which is why companies are receiving notices from the FSSAI, he said.
Industry “taking a chance”
He believes that most of the Indian supplement manufacturers would know that NMN ingredients and supplements need to be approved by the FSSAI under the “non-specified food” route before commercialization.
“Most of them would know, but they are doing it by taking a chance or on their own risk,” he said, adding that consumers probably weren’t aware of the legal situation.
“Companies are selling anything because it’s a very big country and the regulator is very small in the sense that they do not have that kind of strength or enforcement activities.”
He urged companies to follow the proper regulatory channel by securing product approval before selling their NMN products in the market.
None approved, two “under process”
A check on the latest list of approvals and rejections released on the FSSAI website on June 3 found no approved NMN ingredient or product.
Two applications are “under process,” and another six applications have been rejected.
One of the two applications that is still under process is Decode Age NMN by Centenarians Life Sciences Private Limited. The application was received two years ago on August 2, 2024.
The other is an application by GATACA Labs LLP, which the regulator received on June 29 last year. It was not specified if the application was for an ingredient or product.
New ingredients approval typically takes about six to eight months, said Rahull.
“But companies may sometimes not know how these applications work and would need to partner with regulatory experts that can help prepare the dossier,” he said.
Examples of proper dossier documentation include scientific justification, clinical data, toxicological studies, the Certificate of Analysis (CoA) process flow and regulatory approvals in other parts of the world.
