Specifically, it was found to lower low-density lipoprotein (LDL), total cholesterol, very-low-density lipoprotein (VLDL) and triglycerides, alongside increasing levels of high-density lipoprotein (HDL).
In addition, there were improvements in several cardiometabolic biomarkers such as adiponectin, ApoA1 and ApoB.
Writing in the Journal of Dietary Supplements, researchers wrote that the findings suggested that Dose for Cholesterol could potentially serve as an effective intervention for maintaining lipid homeostasis and supporting cardiovascular health.
Study method
These findings were based on a clinical trial funded by US-based Eetho Brands, which manufactures the line of Dose products.
Dose for Cholesterol is a botanical nutraceutical formulation containing organic herbs and micronutrients such as turmeric, pomegranate, amla, ginger, black pepper, niacinamide, CoQ10, folic acid and lycopene. It was designed to support lipid metabolism and cardiovascular health.
Conducted by researchers from India and the US, the study recruited 86 healthy adults with normal lipid profiles from the patient database of Unity Hospital in India.
Participants received 60 mL of Dose for Cholesterol (n=43) or a placebo (n=43) twice daily for 90 days.
Changes in lipid profile, including LDL, HDL, VLDL, total cholesterol and triglycerides levels, as well as cardiometabolic biomarkers such as adiponectin, apolipoprotein A1 and apolipoprotein B were measured from the start to the end of the study.
Safety was also evaluated with liver and kidney function markers. The presence of any adverse events, such as gastrointestinal or taste-related concerns, was also recorded.
Key findings
By the end of the study, the intervention group saw significant reductions in their LDL, total cholesterol, VLDL and triglycerides levels. HDL levels were also significantly increased.
In the placebo group, the results were opposite, with significant increases in LDL, total cholesterol, and a significant decrease in HDL.
Researchers said these findings suggested the supplement has a lipid-lowering effect and may help improve blood lipid profiles. Abnormal levels of total cholesterol, triglycerides, LDL, VLDL or HDL, a condition known as dyslipidaemia, are a major risk factor for cardiovascular disease.
Overall, 95% of participants reported a positive impact of the supplementation on their LDL levels, while 90% experienced improvements in triglycerides and VLDL, and 81% reported improvements in total cholesterol.
In addition, the intervention group reported a significant increase in adiponectin and ApoA1 levels, while ApoB levels were significantly lowered. No significant changes were observed in the placebo group.
These two biomarkers are indicators of cardiometabolic risk, and the favorable changes seen in the intervention group suggested that the supplement may have a beneficial effect on cardiometabolic health.
Instead of attributing the outcomes to a single active ingredient, the researchers believe that the synergistic ingredient blend was responsible for the improvement.
“The present findings likely reflect complementary and potentially synergistic mechanisms, including antioxidant activity, modulation of lipid absorption and transport, enhancement of adiponectin signaling, and favorable effects on hepatic lipid handling,” they wrote.
User compliance was also high, which supports the feasibility and acceptability of the liquid formulation.
“It was postulated that delivering multiple bioactive extracts in a single, convenient liquid format would enhance user adherence compared with conventional capsule-based supplementation,” they added.
No adverse events were reported during the study, supporting the possibility of an evidence-based, plant-derived nutraceutical formulation as a safe and effective intervention for maintaining lipid homeostasis and supporting cardiovascular health.
Researchers have recommended future studies to evaluate this formulation in populations with dyslipidaemia, assess longer-term efficacy and safety, investigate the mechanisms of action through metabolomic profiling, and examine effects in diverse ethnic populations beyond India.
