Bridging the gap between gut-axis and women’s health

As a complex, untapped market, women’s health is transitioning from reactive solutions to a highly personalized approach.

In 2025, the global women’s health market size was estimated at $53.5bn and is protected to reach $75.4bn in 2033.1 This growth can be attributed to women taking a more proactive, autonomous role in their health, focusing on prevention and gaining a deeper understanding of their bodies.

In a recent Spotlight On in partnership with ADM, ‘Winning women’s health: Targeted nutrition strategies for every life stage’, experts from ADM – Aouatef Bellamine Ph.D., global scientific marketing director; Alicia Humpert, global marketing director microbiome; and Vaughn Dubow, senior director marketing NAM H&W – examined the shifting consumer expectations, unmet needs, and growing demand for targeted, science-backed solutions.

“1.8bn people menstruate each month worldwide, and 20% of women see hormone balance as a concern,” says Vaughn Dubow, senior director marketing NAM H&W at ADM.

“Additionally, more than one third of female consumers are using vitamin and mineral supplements to address symptoms of their natural hormonal cycles or menopause. So this is an established space – women are looking for solutions and are looking to improve upon solutions that they are currently using.

“We also see that 80% of women globally are consuming some sort of nutritional supplement on a regular basis. So that goes to show that dietary supplements are not new to the women’s space. They are really the basis of how we can take control of women’s health on an everyday basis,” adds Dubow.

To support women through the wide ranging health concerns experienced throughout the lifespan, it is important to provide proactive care, personalized solutions via each life stage, and evidence-based solutions. “These three things are really going to be the difference between effective solutions for women’s health,” says Dubow.

The gut microbiome and women’s health

As women go through the lifespan, gut health is fundamental at every stage – from puberty through to postmenopause. The gut microbiome communicates directly with the brain through the gut-brain axis, deeply influencing how the body handles stress and regulates sleep – impacting a variety of fundamental bodily functions. And while the women’s health market is growing, awareness of the importance of gut health is still fairly low.

“Previously we thought menopause was a one-size-fits-all event in women’s life. We are now recognizing that it’s really a transition. Having gone through many stages of a woman’s life, I feel like we’re continuously having transitions in our life from puberty to reproductive years to pregnancy to postpartum,” says Alicia Humpert, global marketing director at ADM.

“We really need to focus on personalized care for those times and needs, whether you’re having difficulty sleeping or having hot flashes, or other stress that’s occurring in your life,” adds Humpert.

To help women through this transition, ADM have a range of targeted nutrition strategies for every stage of women’s health. The L. gasseri CP2305 postbiotic – part of the Elga® series – is one example of this. Exploratory research suggests that the postbiotic leverages the gut-brain and gut-microbiome axes to support women’s health.

Studies show that supplementing the diet with 10B cells/20mg of L. gasseri CP2305 postbiotic daily can support:2-3

  • Support positive moods in healthy young women experiencing premenstrual symptoms
  • Reduce stress/anxiety in healthy young women experiencing premenstrual symptoms
  • Improve vaginal discharge in healthy young women experiencing premenstrual symptoms
  • Improve skin appearance in healthy young women experiencing premenstrual symptoms
  • Reduce occasional constipation in healthy young women experiencing premenstrual symptoms
  • Support positive changes in physiological and emotional parameters by women experiencing menopause

“This strain can support positive mood in healthy women experiencing premenstrual symptoms, [and as results show] a reduction in stress and anxiety among participants,” says Aouatef Bellamine Ph.D., global scientific marketing director at ADM.

By showing improvements in these key health outcomes, the study highlights the role of the microbiome in supporting women across life stages.

As a heat-stable postbiotic, L. gasseri CP2305 is well suited for incorporation into nearly limitless applications from traditional supplements and gummies to functional foods of all kinds.
