EU Regulations Round-Up: Article 8 and PPWR

Overview

Food supplements are classified as foodstuffs and are therefore subject to the EU’s general food legislation, which applies horizontally to all food products. Their specific regulatory framework is set out in Directive 2002/46/EC, transposed into national law by all 27 EU Member States. In practice, companies must also consider national requirements, including market notification procedures, rules on permitted or prohibited plants and substances, and any maximum levels set for vitamins and minerals.

Annex III to Regulation (EC) No 1925/2006 identifies substances whose addition to foods, including food supplements, is prohibited, restricted or under scrutiny across Member States. Lipoic acid, hydroxycitric acid, berberine and fennel are among the ingredients under evaluation, and EFSA will assess others identified by food safety authorities. The outcome could decide whether a key ingredient stays in a formulation or puts a product line under review.

Packaging and sustainability claims face the same scrutiny. The Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR), applicable since 12 August 2026, aims to reduce packaging waste, improve recyclability, promote reuse and increase recycled content. The Empowering Consumers for the Green Transition Directive (EmpCo), applicable since 27 September 2026, addresses misleading environmental claims and sustainability labels. Together, they affect packaging design, sourcing and marketing.

In this 60-minute session (including a Q&A with the speakers), our expert panel will set out what has changed, what is still in play, and what it means for your business:

  • Article 8 under the microscope: the latest on ingredients under evaluation and what upcoming EFSA assessments could mean for your formulations.
  • PPWR in practice: how the new recyclability, reuse and recycled-content requirements will apply in coming years.
  • Green claims after EmpCo: what are the criteria to determine a go or no-go on packaging

Whether you lead regulatory affairs, product development or commercial strategy, you’ll leave with a clear view of where EU rules are heading, with time to plan rather than react. Register now to secure your place.
