GNC adds new flavour, S'mores, to its Scan-Diet weight loss range
after nationwide competition to decide on a new name.

General Nutrition Corporation (GNC) has added a new flavour to its Scan-Diet range of meal replacement products. The new flavour is called S'mores and was named after a Name the Flavour competition run on the Scan-Diet website.

"We were excited to have a Scan-Diet bar actually named by the people who matter most - our customers. It is important to us to use the feedback we receive from people using our weight loss programme," said Laurie Cochran, GNC manager of public relations.

The name was chosen by Kristine Barrett, who beat more than 2,800 other entries with her submission Lose S'more.

The Scan-Diet S'mores meal replacement bar is the most recent Scan-Diet product launch, but other product launches in the last year included meal replacement bars in Strawberries n' Creme, Chocolate, Peanut Butter and Blueberry Cheesecake flavours, as well as ready-to-drink shakes in Mixed Berry, Chocolate and Vanilla.

The company said that two Scan-Diet bars provide the same amount of patented soy protein and fibre found in one powder-mix packet or ready-to-drink shake.

Cochran also cited a clinical study by the New York Obesity Research Center at St. Luke's/Roosevelt Hospital which showed the Scan-Diet weight loss programme was effective in reducing body weight, body fat and cholesterol. The study also found that those who used Scan-Diet had a greater reduction in total cholesterol and LDL (or 'bad') cholesterol, above and beyond what could be attributed to weight loss alone.

Scan-Diet was created by GNC, the largest speciality retailer of vitamin, mineral and herbal supplements and sports nutrition products in the US. It is a wholly owned subsidiary of Royal Numico, the Dutch nutrition company.
