Canadian omega-3 supplier Ocean Nutrition has opened a new office
in Australia to better target the country's functional foods
market, writes Dominique Patton.

The company is currently working on major expansion of its production of omega-3 ingredients to meet demand, with a $10 million expansion of concentrate production in Mulgrave, Nova Scotia announced last year, and the purchase of a new production facility in February expected to further double its capacity.

While it has benefited from a short supply in Europe, the firm has also seen growing orders from Australia.

"Over the last two years we have built up a sizeable business for both our fish oils into fish oil capsules and our microencapsulated omega-3 powder as healthy food ingredients for products in Australia," said Robert Orr, president and CEO at Ocean Nutrition Canada.

He added that Australian customers will be better served with a new office in the region..

The firm has appointed Kevin Krail, previously general manager with distribution firm Nutrition Imports, as general manager of the Sydney-based office, which will also oversee business in New Zealand.

Krail has also managed the functional foods business at H.J. Heinz.

He will be responsible for developing new business in the region and providing support to existing customers.

The private company said it will continue to use Pacific Resources International (PRI), based in Neutral Bay, as their local distributor and sales support for their product ranges.
