The second part of this exclusive interview sees Beneo executive board member, Yves Servotte, explaining the cooling but not crushing effect of EU prebiotic health claim rejections on its inulin-chicory business.

“Prospects are on hold because people are a little bit hesitating about what to do and that’s fair,” he said. “But on the other hand there are other claims linked to the chicory products like fibre and there you know that fibre enrichment of products is really high in demand and that is where we are very effective.”

Servotte said the EU regulatory system was influencing more than just Europe and that areas like medical foods would grow in importance, but functional foods remained the company’s main focus.

“Our battle in the first instance is functional foods.”
