Alliance for Natural Health: BREXIT would not help herbal sector
"The UK has been quite instrumental in developing food safety legislation and has had a lot of input to the development of an EU framework for food safety," said Dr Robert Verkerk, executive & scientific director at the Alliance for Natural Health - International (ANH-I).
"Even though only elements of food and supplement laws are harmonised EU-wide, the principles are widely accepted and feed into national laws. That means there is reasonable harmonisation in approach, even though some EU member states may be more restrictive than others in certain areas.
"Germany, Denmark and France are among the countries that continue to be intolerant of high dose vitamins, for example, while the UK and Ireland have some of the most restrictive approaches when it comes to herbs. Unfortunately for UK natural products sector, BREXIT would be unlikely to change that situation."
