Roquette extends reach to gluten free market with new mannitol grade

Plant-based pharmaceutical ingredients specialist Roquette has launched a wheat-free filling/bulking agent to tap into the gluten free market.

The new offering, Pearlitol SW-F, is a wheat-free sugar-free and non-GMO composition with similar direct compression tableting properties to the firm's existing range of Pearlitol SD mannitol grades.

Brian Koblinski, Roquette’s product manager, explains that Roquette’s direct compression mannitol grades are manufactured with good flow and compactability properties, allowing tablet manufacturers to do a dry blend of excipients before going straight to their tablet press.  

He adds that there are other wheat-free filler options on the market but they don't offer the same flow properties.

“There are other filler options for wheat-free, for example blends of crystalline mannitol with other excipients, but these do not flow very well and thus do not achieve the same productivity.”

He adds that the market for gluten free products is worth $6.8 billion.

Direct compression filler

Roquette’s spray-dried Pearlitol SD mannitol grades, particularly 200SD, have long been considered a leading direct compression functional filler/diluent for oral dosage nutraceutical, OTC and prescription products.

This multifunctional excipient has commercially been employed in chewable and oral disintegrating tablets (ODT’s), including many vitamin supplements on the market today, among other customised oral dosage forms and actives.
