The United Natural Products Alliance has announced a new policy on hemp extracts while at the same time announcing its first member engaged exclusively in the business.

Yesterday UNPA unveiled its new policy. The quality and compliance criteria laid out in the new policy form the basis of UNPA’s membership criteria for both new and current Executive-level members.

“While efforts at the state and federal level to clarify the legal status of hemp extract and cannabinoid products continue, UNPA believes it is in the interest of consumers, health professionals and relevant industries to establish a framework of practices and compliance standards for hemp extract/cannabinoid products,” said Loren Israelsen, UNPA president.

Policy details

The new policy requires new hemp members to agree to the following as part of their membership application:

  • Compliance assessment
  • Website review
  • Label/labeling (may include packaging, printed literature, websites, social media, etc.)
  • UNPA staff & Executive Committee review & vetting.
  • UNPA also drew a bright line in the sand that the policy applies to hemp derived ingredients only.  Companies making synthetic cannabinoids will not be eligible for membership.

The policy also includes numerous provisions on things such as adverse event reporting, recall procedures, FTC claims compliance and others.

The first hemp member is Mile High Labs whose membership was announced today at a breakfast meeting at the SupplySide West trade show in Las Vegas, NV.

Mile High Labs unveiled its 400,000 square foot facility for hemp extraction in Broomfield, CO earlier this month.  The facility was repurposed from drug manufacture and came replete with a suite of pharmaceutical manufacturing equipment. Mile High Labs intends to concentrate on the manufacture of CBD isolates.
