WATCH: Nippon Flour Mills reveals new healthy ageing ingredient to prevent mobility-related disability

At the recent HI Japan show in Tokyo, NutraIngredients-Asia spoke to Nippon Flour Mills’ Kouhei Kawaguchi to find out more about the company’s clinical trials on this ingredient in collaboration with the University of Hyogo.
One study published in 2017, found 16 weeks intake of maslinic acid (30mg/day) had a protective effect on chronic knee pain in elderly Japanese residents.
Another study revealed that maslinic acid supplementation (60mg/day) was found to improve muscle strength and mass in elderly, when combined with moderate resistance training.
These studies suggest that maslinic acid supplementation could be effective in preventing mobility-related disability in elderly people, and improve their quality of life.
According to TPC marketing research in Japan, the number of people with locomotive symptoms or reduced mobility is 47 million in Japan, and market size is valued at JPY 135 billion.
Kawaguchi said maslinic acid is a relatively new ingredient in the Japan market that has shown effectiveness sufficient to meet Food with Function claims (FFC)
He said it can used in various food and supplements applications for its good heat and pH stability, as well as high bioavailability.
