Nutraceutical firms have reported a higher uptake of sleep aid and stress relief supplements amid the COVID-19 pandemic, according to New Zealand brand GO Healthy and Spanish saffron ingredient supplier Pharmactive.

Both companies have been selling products tackling stress and sleep difficulties for years, but have seen the category grew at a faster rate this year, which they believe is related to the pandemic.

GO Healthy saw over 75% growth in its sleep and stress market in Australia. Back home in New Zealand, it enjoys about 30% of the market share.

The company’s traditional bestsellers under the sleep and nervous system range are its GO Magnesium 1-A-Day and Go Magnesium sleep supplements.

This year, it released new products such as GO Kava 4,200mg 1-A-Day and GO Ashwagandha 8,000+.

“In 2020, a lot more people are exposed to the environmental stress, we are seeing the stress market change and evolve and coming out of this, we are going to see different people looking for these products,” Peta Teuma, product and training manager (Australia) at GO Healthy said.

Pharmactive, on the other hand, saw a double-digit growth for its patented saffron extract Affron®. The ingredient has shown to improve sleep quality and insomnia in a trial conducted in Australia.

Globally, the ingredient is most widely used in the US, while in APAC countries, it has gained traction in Japan and Australia, Julia Diaz, head of marketing said.
