In this month’s edition of Nutrition Asia we shine the spotlight on two firms – Australian brand Activated Probiotics and global supplier Chr Hansen – which are assessing the potential of probiotics to aid immunity, atopic conditions, and sleep.

“Whenever we are looking at probiotics, we are looking at the immune system, because the inherent nature of probiotics mechanism of action is going to be modulating immune function,” said Rebecca Edwards, head of education at Activated Probiotics.

The company currently has a number of probiotics which claim to stimulate or help enhance the immune system function, including Biome Breathe, Biome Daily, and Biome Daily Kids.

For instance, its Biome Breathe product, which uses Bifidobacterium breve B632 and Lactobacillus salivarius LS01, claims to “help stimulate a healthy immune system response”.

Its Biome Daily product, on the other hand, includes strains such as Lactobacillus plantarum HEAL 9 and Lactobacillus paracasei 8700:2, and also claims to “help enhance immune system function and promote healthy digestion”.

Founder Blair Norfolk, said the new product development focus for this year would include probiotics that regulate the immune system to target general cough, cold, winter flu symptoms, as well as atopic conditions.

“The majority of our new product development is linked to immune health in many different ways.

“In terms of our NPD this year, we are looking further into immune regulation for some of the atopic conditions, and we are also looking for immune regulation for general coughs, cold and winter flu,” Norfolk said.

Christian Hansen said there has been an increased understanding on the connection between probiotics and the immune system last year.

In fact, the company recently said revenue from its health and nutrition portfolio between September and November last year was up 15%, largely driven by the sales of its probiotics.

Its flagship strain Lactobacillus paracasei 431 claims to benefit the immune health, respiratory and bowel function.

Linda Neckmar, VP commercial development, Human Health, revealed that the company recently completed a study on the impact of sleep disruptions and the effect on the immune system.

“We will continue to invest in immunity clinical documentation. We will also invest heavily in market communication around immunity and immune benefits that one can get from probiotics,” she said.

In this case, the company recently launched The Probiotics Institute – a platform targeted at communicating with the healthcare professionals, consumers, and B2B partners.
