The last two years have seen an acceleration in the personalized nutrition space, with numerous acquisitions and new initiatives. But what are the key trends to watch in 2021 in this space? We caught up with the American Nutrition Association’s Corinne Bush to find out.

Among the top trends for 2021 in the personalized nutrition space are Immune Resilience; High-Tech Innovations; New Directions in Nutrition Research; Advancing Food Science; Microbiome Boom; Mental Health Nutrition; and Equipping Practitioners for the Future

Speaking with NutraIngredients-USA via video, Bush said personalized nutrition continues to be the “single most important focus of our work [the ANA] and much largely the nutrition ecosystem. Immune typing is as individual as any other type of individuality. It [immune resilience] is not one size fits all,” she said.

“Within immunity, we’re recognizing the immune signatures that people have, beginning to tease those out, and using personalized nutrition to balance immunity is going to be a continued focus of our work and the personalized nutrition world.”

On Mental Health Nutrition, Bush noted: “As a trend, this year more than ever, we’ve had some very serious issues with mental health. The field of nutritional psychiatry pre-dated the pandemic, but the events of this year have been pushing the field forward.”

The ANA will feature a session on nutritional psychiatry at its annual conference later this year, she added.

Bush added that the ANA is committed to championing the science and practice of personalized nutrition, and one of the areas where it excels is preparing personalized nutrition practitioners to stay on top of the rapid advances in the field, including specialty training.

Recently, the ANA launched the Nutritional Genomics Training & Certification program. Approved for Continuing Medical Education (CME) credits, it offers nutrition experts and other healthcare professionals the skills to leverage nutritional genomics to create personalized nutrition interventions.
