Caroline Beckman started her career at just 18 years old. Less than a decade later she has founded, advised and invested in over 10 companies. The founder and CEO of Nouri credits much of her success to her mother, who homeschooled her.

“It was an incredible environment and as you can grow into adulthood and I started my career myself, you realize how much of a sacrifice that is and not having kids yet, I don't really fully understand sacrifice, but I can just tell day-to-day how much energy she put into making sure that we had the best education possible. And ultimately what that did was it seamlessly translated into personal and business life. And a lot of the homeschooling environment and much of the startup environment is you figuring it out and self-starting and the ability to problem-solve,” said Beckman.

Beckman attended college but dropped out after experiencing boredom and not feeling as though she was getting a return on her investment.

“Ultimately [it was] a really great decision and I’m not against school, I think that every child and adult should go where they can learn the most and that includes our jobs, too. I think in professional life we should be in roles and in companies where we can learn the most. And so yeah, I’m very thankful for the startups and the mentors and also ultimately other fellowship programs. I did a Thiel fellowship with the tech entrepreneur, Peter Thiel, and his group. So I had a lot of alternative education to fill that gap.”

Despite the many demands of running a company, Beckman said she still manages to have fun as a 20-something.

“I think there is a false narrative that you're young, don't worry about it, you're young and have fun. I think you should have fun your entire life, and I think that you should enjoy each decade and each year the same. I think you should grow in wisdom, grow in fun, grow in knowledge, grow in resources, as you age,” said Beckman. “Yes, absolutely have fun, as you should every day, I certainly do, but also, this is the time to dig in and this is the time to really plant a lot of seeds.”
