Additionally, Hewlings is a full-time professor at Central Michigan University and co-founder of Substantiation Sciences LLC where she assists companies in supporting their market launch strategies with scientific evidence.
With a day job and a night job, Hewlings said she enjoys staying productive by juggling various interests.
“It's a unique challenge and it forces me to dive into areas that I might not have had a lot of background or experience in, like the functioning of the immune system. And then I also teach. My night job, I teach full time for Central Michigan University in their graduate online nutrition program. So my students keep me on my toes, too. And then, you know, the things intermix, so I'm learning about immunity and Covid-19, and vaccines for potentially a presentation or substantiation. And then I'm talking about it in my classes with my students. So, I like to be in a lot of different places and have a lot of stuff going on.”
Despite the many accomplishments under her belt, Hewlings said it’s important for her to stay motivated and always have goals.
“I want to continue to grow in the field. And certainly I'd like to play more of a role in regulatory functions and impacting science and regulations related to supplements, CBD and cannabis. I think there's a lot to be done there from the science and regulatory side. Also public perception—I think one of my big immediate goals is I'm very disheartened by the public mistrust for the expert which has been a reflection in our culture in the last couple of years. And so I'd really like to play any role that I can in helping to discourage that and to perhaps help enhance the trust.”
