Sports nutrition business Applied Nutrition has launched a new L-Carnitine sports drink called Carni-Tone.

The beverage, which was in development for more than a year before its introduction, is the company’s first flavoured spring water and its first L-Carnitine ready-to-drink product.

It contains 1,500 milligrams (mg) of L-Carnitine, as well as vitamins B3, B6 and B12. According to Applied Nutrition, it is also rich in minerals since it is produced with Northumbria Spring water which is well known for containing high levels of magnesium and calcium.

The health benefits

Thomas Ryder, Managing Director at Applied Nutrition, says: “We’re excited to be bringing Carni-Tone to the market following one of our longest product development cycles.

“L-Carnitine sports drinks are nothing new, but we felt we could significantly improve on what was available to consumers, so we took our time to refine the flavour as well as infusing the drink with other beneficial vitamins and minerals.

“Carni-Tone is a perfect intra workout beverage thanks to the benefits of L-Carnitine, and combined with vitamins B3, B6 and B12, it’s perfect for helping to maintain energy levels during activity.

“Northumbria spring water is well known for its rich calcium and mineral content, and we specifically selected this to maximise both the nutritional benefits of the drink and the clean pure taste across the range.”

Boosting sports performance

L-Carnitine is an amino acid derivative that is popular among athletes due to its ability to boost sports performance. It increases liver and kidney-based production of a nutrient that can burn fat, improve muscle performance and reduce fatigue. This happens because L-Carnitine enables fatty acids to enter cellular mitochondria, where it can then be converted into energy while also shifting metabolic waste away.

The zero-calorie, zero-sugar 500ml drink comes in three flavours: raspberry and cherry, apple and blackcurrant and summer fruits. It can be purchased online through the company's website and on Amazon, and will soon be available at selected supplement stores and gyms in the UK and Europe.

Other L-Carnitine sports drinks available in the market include Body Attack’s L-Carnitine drink, L-Carnitina Carnipure’s L-Carnitine Fit Drink and the Carnitine Activity Drink from Nutrend.
