A scale-up company offering “the microbiome’s most powerful innovation platform” will attend NutraIngredients’ Probiota event next month (Feb 6-8) to showcase its pioneering technology to the gut health industry.

The platform from UK-based ‘Eagle Genomics’ facilitates “radical innovation” by generating novel microbiome insights on complex problems at scale, and evidence to support product claims at speed, paving the way for novel product design.

Joining the Probiota Pioneers panel session at the global event in Barcelona next month, Director of Bioeconomy, Food and Nutrition, Artem Khlebnikov, will explain how this recently developed software platform focuses on the ‘bioeconomy’ - harnessing the power of the microbiome of the environment, animals, and humans to transform the health of our planet.

“The microbe will be the unit of currency for this bio-revolution. Industry leaders will improve products including foods and supplements… rejuvenate soils and provide the tools to reverse climate change," Khlebnikov explains.

“But microbiome data is neither easily accessible nor navigable and the only unifying approach is through causal network science.”

The company’s platform, named the e[datascientist], creates a trusted "data fabric" – an ecosystem of public scientific data and clients’ data, interlinked with machine learning and AI, to support suppliers and manufacturers to make new scientific discoveries and create new health focused products.

He explains the technical challenge that the company is solving is to bridge the translation gap, interlinking scientific knowledge from a range of disparate sources and studies across industries to deliver robust health products across food, supplements, beauty and personal care, agri-tech, and biopharma.

The One Health vision

The company is increasingly focused on supporting customers who share their aspiration to address what they refer to as the "one health" challenge, via more sustainable impact-oriented innovation.

The one health concept recognises that the health of humans, animals, and the environment are interconnected, and that the application of technologies to improve microbiome health in one area can benefit others.

“The soil microbiome is a relatively new area of research but it is fast-evolving and we are starting to understand how the soil microbiome may play a role in the nutritional quality of plants and therefore food,” says Marina Gonzalo, the company’s Scientific Marketing Manager, adding that the nutritional quality within plants which we consume is highly likely to directly impact human health.

“The soil microbiome is a great opportunity to address how we might improve the disease resistance and resilience of plants to infection through a better understanding and exploitation of nature-based solutions without using chemical fertilizers.”

Partners and previous work

Long-standing partner and household name Unilever, has published new research findings unlocking the secret to help dry skin heal ‘from within’. Enabled via insights provided by e[datascientist] Unilever scientists explored new ways of increasing natural ceramide oil production in the skin to help to maintain a strong skin barrier.

Quadram Institute, a world-leading institute creating new interfaces between food science, gut biology, and human health, has also utilised the platform in order to share their work more widely and establish new connections, in addition to more easily interrogating and streamlining new datasets.

NutraIngredients’ annual Probiota event will take place in Barcelona next month, February 6-8.

The event is now booked to capacity but interested delegates can join the waiting list.
