Fermented milk raises Bifidobacterium, butyrate levels - Yakult Indonesia study
A new study conducted by Yakult in Indonesia reports that drinking fermented milk daily for six months could significantly increase the amount of the beneficial gut bacteria Bifidobacterium, as well as the production of short-chain fatty-acid butyrate.
Writing in the World Journal of Gastroenterology, they reported that Lacticaseibacillus fermented milk has significantly impacted the gut microbiota after three months of consumption.
However, fermented milk consumption did not lead to significant differences in stool frequency between the placebo and intervention group.
Vitamin C reduces severity but not hospital stay in kids with pneumonia
A new study from Thailand reported that intravenous vitamin C administration could significantly reduce clinical severity in kids hospitalised due to pneumonia.
However, vitamin C administration did not lead to significant reduction in the length of hospital stay, said the findings published in Clinical and Experimental Paediatrics.
The study compared the effects of intravenous vitamin C given once every six hours at low dose (15mg/kg/dose), high dose (30mg/kg/dose) as compared to giving only the placebo.
Probiotics for sleep: Study shows improvements in sleep onset, daytime dysfunction
The supplementation of the probiotic strain Bifidobacterium animalis subsp. lactis BLa80 has been shown to improve sleep onset and daytime dysfunction, say findings of an eight-week study conducted in China.
The intervention group took 10bn CFU of BLa80 daily and its effects were compared with that of the placebo.
Findings published in Scientific Reports also showed how probiotics use had increased the relative abundance of Bifidobacterium.
Five strains probiotics improves constipation - CKD Healthcare-funded study
A new clinical trial by South Korean dietary supplement company Chong Kun Dang (CKD) Healthcare has shown that supplementation of five probiotic strains could improve signs of constipation.
The probiotics studied in the four-week trial was a product by CKD Healthcare known as Lacto-5X, which contains L. plantarum UALp-05, L. acidophilus DDS-1, B. animalis ssp. lactis UABla-12, B. bifidum Bb-06 and S. thermophilus CKDB027.
Findings published in Food Microbiology and Biotechnology showed that the five strains could improve bowel movements in four weeks.

Despite growing evidence on probiotics’ benefits on mood and mental wellbeing, a new study by Nestle showed no conclusive findings among perinatal women.
The clinical trial, which took place in Singapore, assessed whether the supplementation of Bifidobacterium longum NCC3001 could improve perinatal anxiety and depressive symptoms.
Writing in Scientific Reports, the researchers reported no differences between subjects who took probiotics and placebo.
